JKIA fire caused by electric fault, investigators say

The fire that razed down the arrival terminal at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) two months ago was caused by an electrical fault, independent investigators have confirmed.
The Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) of America, in its independent investigations report on the fire, ruled out terror attack or any other foul play.
US Ambassador to Kenya, Mr Robert Godec revealed the FBI’s finding on the JKIA fire in a meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House, Nairobi Wednesday.

During the meeting, President Kenyatta and the US Ambassador also discussed last month’s Westgate mall terror attack in Nairobi.
FBI was among over 10 institutions that conducted independent investigations on the cause of the JKIA airport fire. The experts’ reports agree that the fire was an accident resulting from the electric distribution board.
President Kenyatta reassured that his Government will work closely with all stakeholders including the international community to counter both internal and external security threats.
“Kenya will work closely with international partners on all security matters for the common good of the country, the region and the world,” he said.
The President said the overwhelming response to both the JKIA fire and Westgate mall tragedies was clear testimony that the world was united in the fight against terrorists.
Investigations into the Westgate mall terror attack in which 67 people died and scores injured, is still ongoing.
President Kenyatta said the Government will not be intimidated by terrorists in their mission to instill fear and despondency among Kenyans and the nation.
In the meeting, attended by Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amb Amina Mohamed, the U.S. Ambassador said his Government was ready to offer any form of assistance Kenya may need in its fight against terrorists.
