The Thika Infano that has left 27 homeless

2 Die In Thika Inferno
Two young sisters have been burnt beyond recognition, 27 other people left homeless and property of unknown value razed to ashes in an early morning incident on Friday.

Majengo Assistant Chief Joseph Irungu Macharia said the fire erupted in one house after the occupants came home drunk. He said it quickly spread to other housing units forcing occupants to jump out, some half naked.
Thika subcounty firefighters and residents tried in vain to extinguish the fire because of more gas explosions.
The mother of the deceased, Phoebe Wairimu, had locked three year-old Linet and five year-old Olivia Njoki in her house and gone to the town centre a kilometer away. She collapsed at the scene when she returned and saw the fire.
Macharia said the homeless were temporarily moved to a community hall in the area where they spent the night, well wishers providing clothing, blankets and food. Others were taken in by friends and neighbours.

This is after fire broke out consuming 20 houses at Ofafa Estate in Thika Town, Kiambu County.
The girls were allegedly left by their mother who left for work and locked them in the house.

According to Majengo Assistant Chief Joseph Macharia, the fire broke out in one of the timbers and iron sheet housing units at mid night before spreading fast. Macharia has indicated that the fire was caused by a gas cylinder that exploded but it’s not yet clear what prompted the explosion.

Efforts by residents and fire fighters from Thika Sub County to extinguish the fire were hampered by more gas explosions in neighboring houses.

Nothing was salvaged.
