Siakago High School Fire

Siakago Boys High School in Mbeere North Sub County, Embu, has been closed down indefinitely after a fire reduced to ashes the school’s main dormitory that houses 151 students.The early morning Tuesday fire that left the students stranded also destroyed all their belongings.The decision to close down the schools was reached after it was observed that it would be difficult for normal learning to continue as many of the students had no place to sleep.According to the Sub-County Education Officer, Peter Magiri, the education board established that it would be hard for normal learning to continue since most of students’ essential items were lost during the fire tragedy.

Magiri assured parents of the safety of the students as nobody was hurt during the incident. Principal Peterson Mugo said the cause of the fire was yet to be established as the students were doing their morning preps when the tragedy struck. Mbeere North Member of Parliament Muriuki Njagagua who visited the school estimated the destruction of the dormitory built in 1979 at over Sh4 million.He called on all stakeholders and well-wishers to come in and help in putting up another dormitory for the students to enable them continue learning.

Mr Njagagua called for a unity of purpose among the leaders in the county and national government to ensure that all sub counties of Embu have at least one fire fighting engine each, noting that despite Embu having two fire engines, none of them was being used.The legislator said that the sub county headquarters of Siakago, Kiritiri and Runyenjes should be equipped with one fire engine each to be used in cases of fire outbreaks.
