Gas leak causes Kimathi Street fire

Several buildings along Kimathi Street were yesterday evacuated after an eatery caught fire Wednesday morning.Employees from adjacent buildings, including Nation Centre were evacuated until the fire was contained.Firefighters managed to put out the blaze, that started a few minutes after 10 am.Police suspect that a gas leak caused the fire, which started on a small eatery on the second floor. The City Star Resturant, which is on the first floor, was undamaged.

Walid Ahmedy, who sells laptops, phones and cameras at a stall in the building, told the Daily Nation he heard a loud explosion, and tried to escape, but the place was filled with smoke.
Patrons and shoppers escaped through windows onto a ledge on the second floor, before jumping onto the roof, and entering Ronalo Foods, from where they left the building.
Security guards outside the popular 'Kosewe' restaurant confirmed that people from the neighbouring building had escaped through their staircase.
