Family fears old curse causes mysterious fires

Mysterious fire myth
A family at Kamuindu village in Karurumo is living in fear due to mysterious fires they attribute to a family curse.  Eucebia Muthoni said the family suspects the series of seven blazes was the result of a hex from her grandfather Josphat Disoi. Disoi, who died 15 years ago, cursed his son for wrongfully occupying a plot of land, she said.  The family has abandoned one of the burnt houses on the homestead in embu East subcounty. Muthoni said the fires have been breaking out day and night for a week. She said the first blaze occurred at around 7pm on May 31.  Muthoni said their 98-year-old grandmother, Rebecca Chiothigari, was sleeping in her room when the fire broke out.

Chiothigari’s bedding was on fire when she was rescued by family members and neighbours. It took three hours to put out the first fire, Muthoni said. On the second day, the fire broke out in another room. Clothes and bedding were partly burnt.
However, 30 minutes later, fire broke out and burnt the salvaged clothes and bedding to ashes. Muthoni said on June 1, at around 2pm, another fire broke out in a room where Chiothigari was sleeping. Her left leg was seriously burnt. On June 3 in the morning, as Muthoni and her aunt were outside, they saw smoke coming from the house.
The cupboard was on fire. They put out the fire and took it outside, but later the cupboard caught fire again and burnt to ashes. The same happened to a cooking oil container that caught fire and could not be put out.
Muthoni said that in the evening, Chiothigari’s mattress caught fire, prompting relatives to come to her rescue. Muthoni said they are terrified of going into the house, lest they are trapped in a fire.
